Sukun Goreng / Fried Bread Fruits (Artocarpus Altilis - scientific name)

Image
Have you ever tried or had this fried "sukun"or bread fruits?. I love the texture of "sukun" fruit as the flesh is soft and tender. It basically has nearly similar taste like cassava/ tapioca but lighter and softer. It can be fried or steam. For fried sukun normally people mixed it with salt and turmeric . But fried sukun my version, I normally will add some curry powder with it. For steam, normally people will steam it with sugar. It's nice to eat it during breakfast or tea. Sukun is from a group of moracea like jackfruit. Last time it was easy to have it as it was grown at my home town' house backyard. During its season we were enjoying varies recipe from this sukun fruit, like sukun fritters made from a very ripe sukun, sukun crackers, fried sukun and steam sukun. Here in Saigon, I can easily get from Ben Tanh market. 1 sukun / bread fruit 1 tea spoon tumeric power 1 tea spoon curry powder a pinch of salt slice the sukun and mix it with t

Agar-Agar Gula Merah / Palm Sugar Jelly

Image
I love my mom's palm sugar and pandan jelly. Since I missed so much of those two types of jelly, so I decided to made an attempt to try make it by myself. At first it didn't turn out as good as my mom did but after few trials I managed to get nearly the similar texture but still not as good as my mom did. But at least I enjoyed it and yet received compliments from my friends . 1 packet of clear jelly powder 1 palm sugar 4 spoon sugar pandan leaves 5 cups water 1 egg 3 spoon coconut milk pour water into a pot, add in the palm sugar, sugar and pandan leaves and bring it into boils. while waiting the mixture to boil, whisk the egg with the coconut milk. When the mixture in the pot starting to boil, add in the jelly powder and let it dissolves. When the jelly had dissolved add in the mixture of egg and coconut milk into the pot. Stir it until it boils and the mixture of egg and coconut milk started to separated from the water (when the bubbles came out), t

Today I invited my best friends, Malaysians that I first met when I arrived in Saigon 4 years ago. We became close friend ever since we spent time shopping for wet groceries at Ben Tanh market. Actually, we are 4 of us but one of us have left to Jakarta for good. They love my cooking and I'm the one who used to host lunch for them since I'm the only Muslim and can reasonably cook Malay food that they missed so much. That's include nasi lemak...he ..he.. But for today one of them missed the lontong so much and requested me to cook lontong for her. Since I'm moving to a new apartment soon, so I decided  to cook lunch and bid farewell to my current place with them. They used to come to my current place for "makan-makan" , chit chatting and  playing badminton, so this would be their last lunch at my current place before I move to a new apartment just across the highway. My simple lontong 1. Nasi ketupat 2. Kuah Lodeh : 5 shallots 3 garlics 1

Vegetarian Restaurant - Hum Restaurant, Saigon

Image
Since I live in Saigon, I just started eating vegetarian since we don't have much choice of nice restaurant to fulfill out appetite. So there is one vegetarian restaurant that originally serve vegetarian food without imitating the taste of meat. They serve purely vegetarian food that cooked well and nicely with a very tasty flavour. Once you in Saigon, you should try their menu. It may be a little bit pricy but worth to pay for the nice taste , nice  and clean ambiance  and good service. Seafood at Local stall in Saigon

Image
Many of Vietnamese love to have shells and seafood while gathering or chit chatting. In the first few years it was a normal view to see local restaurant with small table and very low chairs offers shells and seafood. However, due to modernization more proper table dining mushrooming Saigon demolishing the authentic view of Saigon. But you still can find this local restaurant at the hidden alley. I love to see how simple they prepare the shells and the seafood yet tasty and you can enjoy it while chit chatting with your friends. They normally grill or stir fried the shell and seafood of your choice with butter and served with local dip. No rice nor bread is served when you had this serving at this local restaurant. They don't even serve juice but tra da (sounds cha da) and bottled carbonated drink. I hope they will conserve this type of authentic local restaurants as it was the identity of Saigon or even Vietnam. So sad that the development always rip off all these authentic and

Seafood in Saigon, Vietnam

Lion City Restaurant  Saigon, Vietnam We've been a regular customer to Lion City Restaurant since we resided in Ho Chi Minh City. A Singaporean restaurant that serve HALAL food. I have confident when I've made friend with the owner and no Pork served in this restaurant. We normally had seafood here especially the "Kari Kepala Ikan " or Fish Head Curry. They have many branches around Ho Chi Minh City but we used to go to their base restaurant near Ben Tanh. We like to go to this restaurant as the cooking has nearly the expected taste ( Malaysian taste) not like any other local restaurant that serve Malaysian food but the taste are way too far from the expected taste. The food served with a pleasant presentation and most of the staffs here are attentive to customer's request as they are well trained. About the price, this restaurant is charging at a little bit high price however worth it paying for the taste and the service plus clean toilet. Steam

Since last Saturday was my daughter's 12th birthday, we asked her what she wants to eat for her birthday. However, she just wanted to have the normal menu at Lion City Restaurant. Its our regular visited restaurant should we want to have western menu, here in Ho Chi Minh. Some of the new menu I tried last Saturday was Truffle tagliatelle. T.his restaurant is located behind Rex Hotel and besides the Starbuck. Truffle Tagliatelle   It's under the vegetarian menu. The pasta is cooked perfectly with mix of mushroom and truffle sauce  King Prawn Crudo With Burrata Simple yet satisfying flavour.
